"Non-sign spam from an herbalifer"

Well, I got this in my email today, and the only ISP I can find to complain to is hotmail (if it's a real hotmail account).

I know it would be a waste of time to complain to either Prodigy or the ISP in Italy.

Can any sharks out there with more Internet expertise than I have see anything in the HTML that would help me track down this spammer? (I know this is OT, but thought someone might be able to help).

Email spam is another pile of puke, but here anyway..

The spam appears to originate from 217.13.133.226 which is in an office LAN hosted by spitfireuk.net/spitfire.co.uk . Send a notice to abuse@spitfire.co.uk, l.davies@spitfire.co.uk, n.smith@spitfire.co.uk
Maybe the spammer abused their mail server, or maybe the spammer works there in which case he could get in a heap of trouble.

The spam advertises http://utenti.tripod.it/youttxrt/ which is a free web host so notify abuse@tripod.it, abuse@tripod.com

That page redirects to http://65.83.24.44/
65.83.24.44 is owned by bellsouth.net who is infamous for their irresponsibility toward spam but notify abuse@bellsouth.net anyway of their site.

Get yourself an account from spamcop (http://www.spamcop.net/) and let them decode it for you. You can get a free account, or one that costs $3/month. Makes wading through your inbox a little easier, and getting email spammers accounts cancelled feels almost as good as sharking coroplast!

Thanks for the info - I can trace it to the server in Italy, but know that complaining to non-US ISPs is a waste of time.

My ISP does use Brightmail filtering, which is quite effective, and I can't figure out why the occasional spam slips through.

Hmmm...wonder why the spam that slips through is usually Herbalifers...also, when I go from the CAUSS site to Yahoo to get mail from my account there, the ads they serve JUST HAPPEN to be "work from home" types 80% of the time. I would find it to be a really remarkable coincidence that 80% of the "random" ads served to Yahoo mail accounts would just hapen to be from Herbalife distributors.

I suppose Yahoo has some kind of software that instantly spiders the meta tags of the page you came FROM, and matches it to the keywords of the advertiser you see on the mail pages...it's certainly possible technologically.

In any case, I always click on the "work from home" ad so they have to pay Yahoo for a clickthrough...a few moments of my time that costs them a few bucks.

Any thoughts / opinions, just for fun, though off-topic?

Complaining to asian ISPs is a waste of time. If it came from China a nice message about how Falun Gong and the Free Tibet fund appreciates their support with a copy sent to certain government officials will guarantee that action is taken very quickly.

Filters are not 100% effective. Something you could do is to learn how to trace the spam back to it's source and complain. That will definately put you on a bunch of "do not spam" lists.

Something you should try is clicking on the ad and keep hitting the "reload/refresh" button.

I second the SpamCop recommendation. I LOVE getting a cancellation notice from an ISP. Thankfully, my ISP (Online Today) now automatically filters all my email for viruses and spam content. I go to my message center about twice a week and just check to delete all the spam. If there is a valid email from a mailing list I am on I just check 'approve sender' and then it is no longer filtered. I only receive about 1-2 spam emails per week now that get through the filter, which is remarkable for someone who likes to participate in Usenet without masking their email addy. They didn't even raise my rates for the new service!

one you find out who it is also contact herbalife. Spam is stricly forbidin by herbalife and they should revoke his/her distributorship.
