Hi,Im not sure if anyone here can help but I was recently arrested for theft for the removal of a sign on a telephone pole. The sign I took down wasnt promoting a business, rather a political view and information on how to stop it.There were many of these very ugly(imo)signs in our community. As I stated,Im charged with theft and forced to protect myself legally at a pretty high expense. If anyone has any questions Ill be happy to explain as best I can.I guess im looking for any help in defending myself against these charges. Thanks

First, in what jurisdiction are you? What are the laws there? They are illegal here and we remove them all the time. Who complained and about what political view?
.
Oh, there's a hint of cool in the air, and Winter is coming! I've got to gather more firewood... And Sign stakes make great fire starters!

I would suggest you contact CE in your area, ask where to print out the laws specific to the signs. You could ask the people at CE to support your action, maybe a a written statement that they would have removed the signs eventually, and they approve of volunteers assisting. Also you could start a petition, ask people to sign off that they would like to see all street spam removed ASAP.
Take photos of the street spam you removed ( if there are still signs mounted) and other examples of ugly street spam in your area.
Make sure the judge understands it is a litter issue, not a political issue.
Look at this web site: truckloadbunch.org go to hemerroid section, (their desciption, not mine) it shows examples of street spam gone completely out of control. You can argue your area might look that bad if volunteers don't keep street spam in check.
If you can establish that you are within your rights to remove illegal signs, then you can counter sue for false arrest and abuse of process. (using the court system to harass people who did not break the law) If you are successful with that, then the other side would have to pay your attorney fees and possible damages.
