"West Houston - new shark"

Wow, glad to find people bothered as much as I am about the signs.

Xtrasmart - How do I get a copy of the Houston / Katy city ordinances on signage? Would like to have a copy of that document as I am about to start 'sharking'.

My target area is I-10 / Barker Cypress / Clay Road / Fry Road quadrant.

One of the biggest offenders is the Good Ole' Boys. Every Friday those signs pop up.

What about the signs that are further off the road made of 4x4 post, can I take those down? Usually builder signs. The corner of Clay and Barker Cypress must have 20 of these. How many feet from the road is considered non-private land?

Thanks, any info would be appreciated.

Hey, welcome to CAUSS.

Our local codes enforcement guy tipped me off several years ago about what is ROW and what is private. In Texas, it is almost always certain that the ROW extends from the edge of the street/road to the line of utility poles following the street/road. The ROW includes the poles, because they have a 2' easement in the ROW, and are centered in the easement.

If in doubt, call your local CE officer- they will be happy to tell you the rules.

Happy sharking! Check out the "tools" area of the web site for info to make a "Sharky" stick. Don't leave home without it.

Welcome Welcome. You have the Cypress Shark here on the west side along with Whopper and Xrtrasmart. I have been at it for 7 years, long before I found CAUSS. I'm in Cypress and it is getting worse. The only thing worse is the Barker Cypress between 290 and I-10. You can search my postings and see what we have been up to. You can look at my 4-17 posting "Two are Better than One" to see what we did between 529 and WLY that weekend. With several thousand signs in that corridor every weekend we can use all the help we can get. We did see evidence of some sign cutting going on at 529 at BC. Was that you?

The large post and panel signs, as they are known, are tpically on private property. However the private property is for sale and is typically on a corner to direct traffic. In the Harris county area, typically the dividing line between ROW and private property is the utility poles. The private property starts behind the pole.

http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/tn.toc.htm is where the state statues are under section 393 and 394.

http://www.publicworks.cityofhouston.gov/planning/enforcement/docs/signcode.pdf is where the city of Houston and the extra-territoral laws concering Harris County is located. Since 1985, the city of Houston and Harris county are the same as I understand.

Again welcome aboard and we can use the help.

CypressShark

That was not me. I have not become active yet.

I found this site because of activity at I10 and Hwy 6. A shark has put out Causs stickers on all of the bandit signs there.

Thanks for the info.

Hold fast on the front line fellas!!! I may have to wander down from the land of Bluebell and Bluebonnets to give you a hand!! The farther the spammers creep out Hwy 290... the more worried I get. I remember when Barker-Cypress was the boonies and didn't even have a place to stop for gas, soda and "the necessaries" on the way up to Brenham. Now you boys are the suburbs... YIKES!!!

Five more years and we'll be a suburb...<shudder>

If I can just keep'em from getting across the river...

Welcome aboard, on the signs on 4x4s, I've been wanting to get the landowner's involved to where they come out while we remove those signs while they're present. I have a stihl with less than 10 hours on it that I'm just itching to take to those signs. They're all over this area and the builders just don't give a damn whose land they're placed on as long as they direct buyers to their homes for sale.

I am glad that you are working the same area as I. I work from HWY6 West to FM359 & from HWY 290 to I-59. I found out about CAUSS from the stickers some one put on the signs. If you know where I can get such stickers made, the info would be appreciated. My pet pieve are the power washer signs.

A man after my own heart....

There are a few spammers (Mr Power Washer is one of them) that I adopt as "special" projects. They become special projects when they take no heed of my sign removal tactics in my "home territory".

They post, repost, repost, and repost no matter what message is sent. I have a particular dislike for this cretin because he very blatently attaches his spam even to traffic signs.

This goes way over the line. As distracted as Houston drivers are already they don't need this fool's advertising distracting them further.

When they become a special project, I will stop anywhere, anytime no matter where I am and pull their signs down.

I really have a problem with Harris County, City of Houston, and Texas DOT not doing anything about this guy. Spam in the median and ROW are one thing, spam on traffic signs are quite another. And no one does anything to slow him down.

As for the stickers. I buy the fasson crack and peel off of Ebay and print them on my home printer. Not perfect, but cheap.

I have a feeling that you are the guilty one... Because of a yellow CAUSS.org sticker stuck to a bandit sign, I am now a member. May have been yours... If so, Thanks. That is why I would like to make such signs.

The power washing signs that you have pics of are all from the same guy. His name is Michael. I have met him, as I am a power washer also. A long time ago I used to use bandit signs :'( until I changed my ways for the better & now use the much more expensive direct mail.

The man who posts those signs is a power washer & also has a 2nd business printing signs for himself & others. He uses a call back phone box that he rents & has several phone numbers. He says that he mixes up the numbers & colors of signs to throw people off. 2 other phone numbers that he uses are 281 624-7980 & 281 586-2122. Call any of those phone numbers & you will get the same message from his wife. He lives somewhere behind (to the West of) the Kroger at Hwy 99 (Grand Parkway & Highland Knolls. He drives a 2000 Gray Dodge pick up. He takes great pride of posting his signs along HWY 99, especially at Highland Knolls.

The man who owns the "Flooding French Drain" business is one of his customers. They take turns putting out each others signs.

You are probably aware of the following numbers. But for anyone who is not here are some sign removal numbers that I have chased down for West Houston.

Houston: 713 535-7900

Harris: 713 956-3000

State: Scott Choate 713 934-5927 Handles Hwy 99, Westheimer, I-10 etc.

I need to find out Ft Bend County's phone number. I would appreciate the input if you know it.

As for the stickers. What is "fasson crack" and what do you mean by "peel off of Ebay".

Have a Great Day,
sign ripper 1

Similar "FRENCH DRAIN" signs in the Dallas area are almost certainly tied in with the notorius "We Level Lawns" spammer we call the dirt jerk. The signs have similar construction and are often hung in the same way at the same time and at the same locations as the "we level lawns" signs. There have been reports of "we level lawns" signs in Austin area as well as Houston though with different phone numbers. We have never been exactly sure of what the overall connection is. Maybe it is an extended family using the same scam. Their advertising in the Dallas area is down 98% from 5 years ago.
