"Portland City Code news"

Several months ago Portland began a proposed rewrite of section 14 of the city code. 14.20.070 currently contains clear language that prohibits signs in the public-right-of-way blah blah blah.

Unfortunately, the proposed rewrite changed the easily understood phrases like "signs" into oblique terms like "structures". In other words, a lawyer could demonstrate the activity of nailing signs up would still be illegal, but since lawyers rarely get involved, the individuals responsible would be free to convince themselves they were free and clear.

Well, I don't know how it happened, although I like to think my letter to the mayor helped, but the city has now abandoned the change to 14.20.070.

So even though Portland CE does absolutely nothing whatsoever, at least the city code won't be de-fanged, leaving us vigilantes the freedom to continue our fight. And continue we will!

oh yea, last time I was up in Portland it looked pretty crappy. I think the culprit was some store going out of business, but it was still crappy looking. I actually left the area.
