"NC501 north of Durham"

After reading the forum here for several months, today I pulled my first signs on NC501 in Timberlake:

Three at one intersection said "WORK AT HOME" 800-655-1954 and another just down the road "I LOST 40 lbs" 888-684-9935.

These had all been there quite a while and were put up on telephone polls using a staple gun.

It felt good to rip them down. Should I now call the phone #s to let them know?

Last weekend I saw lots between Roxboro and Danville VA - may try to get them this coming weekend.

Can anyone provide links to NC state and/or municipal laws?

-Coyote

you can try calling and see if its still active. i usually tell them they are losers and how they got scammed. check the other NC threads for the law text. i saw some coming up to richmond yesterday but could not stop for them. raleigh and outlying areas are pretty much clear.

You can go ahead and call the spammers, which is satisfying. Just do it from a phone booth, and be polite(but firm), please.

Although, one of the sharks here in Connecticut thinks it's ultimately MORE satisfying if you DON'T call them. He has a point - if you don't tell them you got their signs, they won't know the signs are gone until next time they go through the area. then they'll go nuts wondering how long it's been since the signs were removed.

Also, if the sings were put up since May 1, you can report them to Herbalife, and they'll get fined (Herbalife seems to be pretty serious about the no-sign rule).

Look in the Tennessee forum for GW's instructions on the reporting process.

The more spammers who ignore the new Herbalife rule and get reported to the company, the less any other spammers will be willing to try to skirt the rule.

Thanks for helping keep America clean.

Thanks and congratulations! There's plenty of junk out there, so feel free to jump right in.

Do it from a pay phone, if you do.

I posted this in the legal forum also:

Here are the legal anti-spam codes in NC:

Signs in the right-of-way or on utility poles are illegal in the entire state, according to NCGS 14-145:

http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/statutes/generalstatutes/html/bychapter/chapter%5F14.html

§ 14-145. Unlawful posting of advertisements.
Any person who in any manner paints, prints, places, or
affixes, or causes to be painted, printed, placed, or affixed,
any business or commercial advertisement on or to any stone,
tree, fence, stump, pole, automobile, building, or other object,
which is the property of another without first obtaining the
written consent of such owner thereof, or who in any manner
paints, prints, places, puts, or affixes, or causes to be
painted, printed, placed, or affixed, such an advertisement on
or to any stone, tree, fence, stump, pole, mile-board,
milestone, danger-sign, danger-signal, guide-sign, guide-post,
automobile, building or other object within the limits of a
public highway, shall be guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor. (Ex.
Sess. 1924, c. 109; 1993, c. 539, s. 84; 1994, Ex. Sess., c. 24,
s. 14(c).)

Some municipalities have ordinances against it as well:

Asheville: Sec. 7-13-3 & Sec. 30-9-4. Signs prohibited in all zoning districts.

Thanks for all the links to codes!

Yesterday in the same area I pulled 3 more I had missed the day before.

I've been thinking of a good use for the signs other than the trash stream. I've begun work on a pattern to make some type of bird house from one. Imagine a sign spammer's face when he rides by where he had posted a sign and sees that I've taken it, made it into a bird house, and returned it to the pole!

I've found that they make excellent target holders. When you're done with a good round, put it back out where it was!

I was in hillsboro and it looks like some spam has creeped back in there. I may make a special trip to clean it up some.

I removed more signs today on NC501 between Durham and Roxboro:

These had been up a while:
(1) I Lost 40#
(1) Work At Home 877-635-WORK

These had not been up very long and were all 1/2 normal size:
(1) Work At Home 800-585-0760 ouranswer.com
(1) Work At Home 800-934-1093 ucan-WorkFromHome.com
(1) Work From Home 800-733-7118 finfreedom2001.com
(2) Work At Home 800-336-5206 www.working123.com

These only went up the night before (I drive the road daily):
(4) Affordable Health Insurance 800-536-3556
two of these were at one intersection and the other two were in groups of (ugly but legal) Person Co. Sheriff election signs.

Someone in North Durham - there is a sign at the corner of Guess and Horton roads that needs a stick because it's high and on the telephone poll with tough nails. It's on the corner where the Subway/Dunkin Donuts is.

Same deal with one at Roxboro/Latta - facing Roxboro by the Realtor office.

If these are Herbalife signs (and they probably are) and they have been posted after April, then these folks are in violation of the Herbalife sign ban. Hpoefully some other shark with more experience in reporting these signs will let you know what is involved in the reporting process.

>These only went up the night

These are the signs in my area (west central FL) that are the biggest problem since the Work at Home folks stopped posting. The only thing that seems to work is quick removal of their signs. Let them know that their efforts are a waste of time and money.

>the other two
>were in groups of (ugly
>but legal) Person Co. Sheriff
>election signs.

Not all election signs are legal but it is best to make sure that they are illegal before removing them. Let CE take care of these if at all possible. They will know for sure.

There are a number of methods for dealing with high signs. Search the archives for "sharkey sticks", "high sticks" and "poles" for some suggestions. If there are ever any concerns about safety (signs close to lines, etc.) then leave it to the professionals.
