"Ahh, Progress"

After about 9 months of intense, almost daily purgings of signs in my town, I am now seeing evidence that spammers are deciding to skip my home town completely when they put out their signs.

Ah, its nice to take a battle rest and see victory in your sights. Spammers quietly submitting to defeat is a great feeling. Oooh Raaa.

Well, let me preface that with "out-of-town spammers"... a lot of the locals still feel it's their God-given right to do whatever is best for business.

Another furniture store going out of business and even though I had a good talk with their manager back in February explaining what he is allowed and not allowed to do, and even though he pretty much complied for several months, now that they are going out of business they've decided to say "the hell with it" and spam all the nearby intersections every weekend.

Several weeks ago they started posting a person on the corner holding an oversized sign to watch all their other signs and make sure I didn't take them down. I decided I was going to be nice and approach him and tell him about the illegality of it all, but by the time I parked and approcahed the intersection on foot, he was gone. The lady soliciting donations for some charity was there and said he was walking over to a nearby fast food restaurant to wash his hand because a bird pooped on it (now if that isn't telling him something!). So, rather than wait for him to return, I just took down all his signs while he was away. He might have been fired from his job because for the next few weekends it was just signs that went up, which I promptly took down each time.

This morning I caught his replacement in the act of putting up the giant 30x30" signs as I was pulling down some other signs diagonally across the intersection. He shouted Hey! to me and I said back that he should take his signs down if he wanted to keep them. He then started to make his way across the intersection, shouting various things (not threatening in substance, just about how he contacted the state highway administration who told him it was ok to post his signs on one side of the highway (yeah, right). By now I had already called the police and they were hopefully on their way.

The guy came over to my side and of course wanted to know who I worked for. "The people who live here" I responded. It went back and forth about how I had no right to do what I was doing and I kept it factual -- quoting the county code and state laws and the fact that it explicitly states that citizens are allowed to take them without being accused of stealing. He accused me of being the problem as to why businesses were doing so poorly. I could have accused him of being the reason that real estate sales are doing so poorly in the area, but I held my tongue.

He started to walk away and place more signs and I took a picture of him while he was doing it. He came back across the street and started attempting to take a picture of me and wanted to know my name. I told him we could do all that when the police arrived, and then ducked into a nearby coffee shop while I waited for the police. He went back to retrieve all his staked signs and walked them back to the store a few blocks away. Just as he was out of sight, the police arrived. FOUR police cars! I gave them the history of this store's sign postings, reviewed the applicable state and county regs, and they offered to go talk with the store manager. They agreed the signs are nothing more than abandoned property.

Just now I drove by and there was the guy standing in the median of a major intersection with a humungous sign (he's allowed these by law, unfortunately) and no other signs in site. It was a bit dicey there for a while, but I think I can put up the MISSION ACCOMPLISHED sign now -- oh but wait, that wouldn't be legal. Never mind.

Great story - don't you just love it when the police are on your side?

Wow that was getting intense.

After a long battle with the spammers you never know what their mindset is. This one was like hand to hand compact. I'm sure he's just one of many you wish you could tell what you think about his illegal advertising. Alot of people wont even know what ever happened to all those annoying signs they would see every weekend. And the battle it took to get this guy to stop. But I'm sure now, the neighborhood appreciates your efforts.

Good experience to learn from for us sharks.

Well, they should know what happened to their signs because I e-mail code enforcement the number and location of all signs I pull down, what they say, how big they are, how they were mounted, etc. etc. Code enforcement calls every one of them and tells them their signs were taken down and what the regs are. Some of them we never see again while others ignore the regs, and still others just wait a while and start up again, perhaps thinking that code enforcement was doing a one-time campaign against signs. Often I can look up the business owner's name on a web search, get their home number, etc. Code enforcement says that's most effective, when they can call them at home, know their name, and tell them they'll be fined $200 per sign if they don't stop. I have a collection of web search resources - cell phone registry info, website registry info, maryland tax records, maryland home improvement commission (MHIC) business registration records, etc. that I use regularly to track these people down. I'm sure many of them have soiled their pants when they get a phone call directly from code enforcement, at home, telling them to cease and desist! Doing the web research takes time but is fully worth it and code enforcement appreciates it.

Sent code enforcement the blow by blow as well, and this morning they promised to pay the furniture store a visit, today, in person. Gotta love it when citizens, police, and code enforcement are all on the same page.

Damn they don't mess around.

I got some license plates, but never anybody's number at home. Any suggestions? The spam I see now is less traceable. Sometimes these spammers work for someone else, and not the business their advertising.

Like these I just seen for the first time.

Even some of the untraceable numbers turn up on Google searches from time to time. Like the one where the JUNK CAR guy's wife used the same number on Craig's List while shopping for a place to rent. Bingo -- I had a name to work with and soon with a little sleuthing I had the guy's name, home address and home phone. And even if the name didn't turn up on the web, I had a reason to call them and ask them for their name. (Hey I have a place to rent starting next month... let me get your name and address so I can do my basic background check -- promise to have it complete by the end of the day...) Make up a reason to call them and ask legitimate sounding questions! Got references? Excellent!

Pops, thought I had your Bulldog puppy sign guy:

Mason, Sean Sean.SynCity@gmail.com
1642 Graystone Canyon Ave
Las Vegas, Nevada 89183
United States
(702) 544-2353

But it looks like this is just the guy that did his website @ bulldogsoflasvegas.com.

This morning the furniture guy was out standing in the median with his one sign on a stick. Looks like they got the message from me, the police, and code enforcement. And funny -- he had no clue I was sitting there at the light this morning not 5 feet from him for about two minutes.

Actually tried the google here for the pupppies. Got a store at Rancho and Craig. Also got owners name from city business license, but no other pop ups for him on the internet.

The number appears in merchant circle web site for businesses. Bad reviews.

I don't get around as much any more but the shop is way across town. And its in the town of North Las Vegas along Rancho. I remember seeing spam starting here in Henderson, and ending over there, near this intersection. Later, I figured it was this spammer who I followed recently to this area where the puppy store is located.

Guilty by association. Funny how these signs had stopped appearing.

...this sign at Henderson 95 exit Sunset.
Starting following Spammer at Boulder Hwy-Russell, then about 20 miles later on the west side of town at Cheyenne-Rancho in North Las Vegas he parked his truck.

the spammers are back at the same intersection.

I removed some last week and more of the same appeared back on the same pole this week. But this time another sign for $8.00 carpet cleaning appeared. I know who he is. It could be him installing all three signs. He lives close by. So, new signs old spammer.

I removed again and destroyed.
