"I think someone isn't happy ;)"

Hia,

Me and a buddy cruised down into New London on Sat night. Ended up hitting along Colman St., Bank St. and Rt. 1 into Waterford. Nabbed several around the waterford Stop and Shop area. Hit the Waterford BJ's/Wallmart area and nabbed a few, went into Niantic and up Rt. 156 to River Road intersection. Then back up 395 to Norwich. Took the 2A connector by the Mohegan Sun to check on Rt. 12 a bit. Nabbed several new ones just put up that day. Definatly will have to do a Groton Rt. 12 check during this comming week; I'm positive they will have put new ones up all ready. i-c-gold.com is brutal.

As we pulled into the newly rebuilt Cumberland farms just up from the Old Thermos factory, we noticed a car sitting with a single occupent. It was about 1:45 AM and the station was closed/Lights off. I parked about 10 feet away from the parked car and got out Sharky Stick in hand. *Right* after I took the first swing, the parked car abruptly started up and took off! My friend said the occupent was feining 'not looking' as I went up to the sign, but showed a distinct look of irritation as I hit the sign

Signs from all areas covered included uwilltoo.com, athome-biz.com, and our old standby i-c-gold.com. Total was 36 signs, ~10 per Hour over a pretty good sized area, not bad I thought.

When I returned home Friday from work, I had a message waiting on the ans. machine from our pal @ www.findfreedom.com/cashx He was rather disturbed that someone should be taking down so much of his tear-tab and pocket spam and declared that he knew that there wasn't anything wrong or illeagle about it. I gave a friendly ring back and quoted over the phone the first paragraph of Sec. 23-65 of the CT Gen. Statutes. I informed him that it most definatly was illeagle and made the analogy that if he would allow me to put a sign on his personal vehical and one in his front yard, then I could perhaps agree with his postition. Haven't got a call back yet.

I've been getting quite a bit of good words and positive feedback from people I know and friends of friends, etc... Word is definatly getting out now. I was a bit worried today though when I saw a 30-sec spot on the USA network advertising an MLM. Hmm, what to do, What to do.

Cheers,

~Jason

Hmm. I don't think I'd recommend calling spammers from your home or giving them your home phone number when you leave a message with them. Maybe the one you talked to was just irritated, but others could get enraged enough to the point where they try to do something physically to you or your home. Someone reported on the Texas forum that they had a brand-new Suburban attacked and totaled by an enraged spammer. I've left comments in some people's Web site guestbooks saying that the signs are illegal and pasted copies of city or state sign ordinances, but that's about it. (And I've given fake addresses and phone numbers, like a street address right in the middle of the Minnesota River, a phone number that's used for pay phone testing, and something like "i.value@my-privacy.com.)

As far as the 30 second TV spots go: Well, we'll just have to get our own 30-second TV spot declaring that street spam is illegal. I suppose if these clowns want to spend that much money advertising on TV, that's OK. It's legal and it actually supports the TV station or cable company. On the other hand, I've found some rather disturbing information about MLMs recently, particularly Newest Way to Wealth, that suggests people are losing A LOT of money doing this. It makes me want to get the word out about MLM's in the bluntest way possible.

GW comments :

I was the one that posted in the Texas forum regarding the trashed Suburban. This informatmon came directly from a person that witnessed the damaged vehicle.

I can't over emphasize the point of not calling from your home phone, regardless of the situation. These folks all travel in the same circles and as stated, what is an irritation for one will cause another to go off the deep end.

You guys in the Northeast don't have the "bubba redneck" mentality like we do in the south and southwest. But, you do have group with a similiar attitude of grudge factor. You can not be too careful when dealing with these guys.

Be stealthy, be safe!

Good advice. I use my fax line (which is unlisted) to call the spammers. They can call back all they want, and all they get for their effort is an annoying tone.

Otherwise, use a pay phone.

Jason had floated that idea recently - going to local-access cable stations or PBS stations in your state to ge a PSA run. This is something we all ought to be looking at.

I don't much care about MLMs except that they put up ubly signs in my state. Although, I guess it's the whole "money for nothing" MLM attitude that makes their minions think they have a "right" to free advertising at everyone else's expense...

If you want detailed info on how the MLMs work, go to http://www.mlmsurvivor.com. They concentrate on the granddaddy fo MLMs (Amway), but all of them are built on the Amway model, so they're all the same.

You could also check out the Skeptic's Dictionary at http://skepdic.com for great information on how MLMs and other scams work - highly recommended reading.

In the meanwhile, we'll just have to go on making our towns a very expensive place for the spammers to put up signs. They're generally a little slow on the uptake, but might get the message eventually.

Good coverage! I went to Mystic on Saturday and it's clean; did not have time to run from there on Rte 1 in either directions, but should soon.

Guess our spammers aren't rough 'n' tough like the ones in Texas; I suspect down there he'd have been in your face. Or maybe it was the large metal object in your hands that kept him from having a discussion with you.

You're doing great work. Maybe Brett "uwilltoo" Mance will back off now. Have not seen "icgold" on this side of the river.

And you're getting more people out your way actively ripping down signs, which is the best thing of all.

Which MLM was the commercial for?
