A devious friend of mine suggested that if we just covered the message of a sign with something like "Free Oriental Massage" and left the phone number, the sign posters would be deterred from posting illegal signs...a moral question...is this too dastardly?

That is an interesting approach. Sometimes simply removing the signs is not enough, you have to punish the street spammer with unwanted calls. That will make them think twice before placing more signs. You can read my posts on the general forum to read the creative ways I annoy street spammers.

Well... I saw a sign today for car detailing. Someone had cut off part of the phone number and attached a sticker saying they had stained his dash.
I got a chuckle out of that one. The scary thing is that it probably was true. Anyone sleazy enough to put up illegal signs probably doesn't use safe cleaning products.

In Vegas we have a good number of carpet cleaners that that routinely spaming our streets. I’ve always thought of placing the phone number of a one carpet cleaners signs over a competing carpet cleaner’s spam. This way one spammer would think that the other is taking advantage of his signs and start a feud between competitors.
I have never done this and probably never will, although it could be fun.

Sounds like fun. However, I think we need to ask whether it will actually cut down on spam. You would still be marketing one of the companies (the public would not know the difference) and they would see a profit from putting up illegal signs.
Plus, if a feud developed, it might mean more street spam, not less.
Perhaps if you place the number of code enforcement over the original number...

I love it!
I was thinking about getting large stickers that say "Scam" or "Under Investigation," but I like the Oriental massage ones better. I was thinking about getting a little more down and dirty. I wonder how that would work out. Would the signs be removed faster by the city?
You may start seeing them in central Denver before you know it.
I think we need to have more fun with our street spammers!
